Do it for the 'gram

Our world has changed. We share just about EVERYTHING.
If we have a Netflix subscription, we're probably looking for someone who doesn't so we can share it with them. If we do something good for ourselves, the benefits aren't realized until we share it. If someone does something nice for us, did we even thank them if we didn't share it?
There are many who would—and probably should—revolt against this behavior. But, it's happening whether we agree with it or not. So why not leverage it?
Financial advisors are doing a great service for their clients. They're helping them along the path to financial wellness. So, why aren't people taking selfies in their financial advisors' office when they're getting fiscally fit like they do in the gym when they're getting physically fit?
Well, there's a few reasons. But, there's also a few things we can do to promote sharing financial wellness.
First of all, it's historically been taboo to share finances. Money is funny. But, like Venmo proved with their timeline of emoji-infused payments… as long as the dollar amounts are not visible, the social butterflies don't mind sharing.
Secondly, the financial advisors' office usually doesn't offer a nice backdrop like the gym does. I mean, do you even lift, bro? But this can be changed—you can create a space worth sharing.
Did you know that some people pay to go to places that are nothing more than staged photo op areas? Can your office be a free photo op destination? Of course it can. And, it doesn't have to be tacky. How about a giant, antique bank safe? Or a futuristic lobby? If you make your space more like a photo op, more of your clients are likely to share it. And, some folks may even visit you who are just, “doing it for the gram." You give them a place to take a picture, they give you free advertisement.
Lastly, can you give your clients something worth sharing when they take home their financial plans? What do your financial plan folders look like right now? Are they just a plain folder with your logo on it? What if you had a more edgy design? I know I'd share the folder my financial plan came in if it said: “My future wine fund" or “My beach house is in this folder" or perhaps “The secret to retiring early is inside."
Our society has an incessant need to share. Especially when we've done something to be proud of. So, why not leverage it and give your clients something worth sharing? When their friends ask where they were, I'm sure they will be happy to share.
